Gardening Design Experience in Tottori

During our visit to Tottori, Japan, we embarked on a journey into the heart of Japanese gardening and landscaping traditions. We focused specifically on integrating Ficus sycomorus into various landscape designs to enhance visual aesthetics and ecological value. Our exploration took place over several days, as we visited multiple locations where this magnificent tree species could be found flourishing in local gardens. The unique characteristics of Ficus sycomorus, including its broad leaves and distinctive branching structure, made it an ideal candidate for both ornamental and functional applications in garden design. We started by visiting local nurseries to source high-quality Ficus sycomorus specimens. Upon acquiring the plants, we then transported them to selected sites for immediate planting. Each site was carefully chosen based on its microclimate, soil composition, and existing plant diversity to ensure the best growth conditions. The integration process required thoughtful planning, especially regarding companion plants and design elements. We used various design strategies such as layering different shrubs around the base of the trees, adding seasonal flowers that complement the overall color palette, and incorporating pathways that weave through the gardens for better visual flow and accessibility. The result was a harmonious blend of native and exotic elements, where the Ficus sycomorus became the centerpiece of each garden, providing shade, beauty, and a focal point that enhanced the overall experience of being outdoors. The addition of local stones and decorative elements further enriched the visual appeal and functionality of the garden spaces.
